The exhaust manifold comes off with the head — and manifold hardware heat-cycles until it seizes, stretches, or snaps. Reusing it is how a fresh head ends up with an exhaust leak. Yes. 3406742 is the current Cummins number for this head; RX on the end means their remanufactured-exchange program and PX means new. This head replaces all of them — brand new, with no core charge.

Why do N14 heads crack?
Valve-seat cracking from thermal fatigue is the classic N14 failure. That is exactly why this casting runs a 250–300 MPa tensile rating (typical OEM: 175–200 MPa), 5% more nickel and 15% larger cooling ports — more fatigue resistance, lower peak temperatures.

What else should I replace while I'm in there?
Upper gasket set and new head bolts at minimum, and new exhaust manifold mounting hardware — it wears out from heat cycling and the manifold is already off. If the engine overheated, have the deck checked before assembly.
